Council officers are to seek emergency powers to evict travellers from a Huddersfield school,.

They hope to get backing from Huddersfield County Court today to move the travellers from the Salendine Nook High School Academy complex.

If the application is approved, bailiffs will be brought in to move on the travellers tomorrow.

But it is then expected both the school and Kirklees Council will be left with a hefty bill for the legal action and for the clean-up.

The travellers arrived yesterday and set up camp on playing fields at the front of the school campus.

This morning there were five caravans, two vans and a car and a number of people on the site.

It is just 12 months since a previous group of travellers occupied the same playing fields.

Travellers have also set up camp in the past on playing fields at Celandine Avenue, Salendine Nook, at Lindley Moor Road and at Reinwood recreation ground, prompting Kirklees Council to carry out security measures including barriers, gates and large boulders.

Clr Gemma Wilson said: “I was notified overnight about the travellers and went down to take a look.

“I have been liaising with Kirklees Council and officers are going for an emergency 24-hour eviction which would enable them to get bailiffs on the site tomorrow.

“There will then have to be a deep clean of the site which is a playing field.

“I have also been speaking to the firm which manages the school site and they are taking about new measures including more boulders to stop vehicles getting on to the fields”

The pitch is used by Junction FC, who play in the Huddersfield District League, and by school teams.

The new football season starts in less than two weeks’ time.
