It towers over our area and has done in various forms since 1956.

We're now onto the third Emley Moor mast and the current one is an amazing 1084ft tall, making it the UK's largest freestanding structure.

It's even 20m taller than the much-hyped Shard building in London.

The first mast, which was 443ft, was taken down in 1965 and replaced with a new larger structure which measured 1265ft and was supported with guy ropes.

But in March 1969 this tower collapsed when the weight of ice on the tower and ropes combined with high winds to topple the structure.

The tower we see today was completed in April 1971.

This mast has seen many changes in the landscape which it looks down onto but remains a favourite with photographers in Huddersfield.

The image above was taken by Claire Connor in 2012 and shows the warm weather we enjoyed alongside the mast.
