MELTHAM swimmer Emma Whiteley has been chosen to inspire the next generation of Olympic competitors.

Emma, 16, has been selected by the Youth Sport Trust as a Young Ambassador for Sport for the 2012 Olympic Games.

She will soon be visiting schools around Kirklees, talking to pupils about how they could be involved with the Olympics and coaching games sessions to encourage them into sport.

Emma will also talk about her own hopes of competing in the Olympics.

She has been swimming since the age of four and has already represented England and Great Britain in international competitions.

Emma was put forward for her role while she was a pupil at Honley High School last year.

She has now started her first year at Huddersfield New College, studying law, psychology and sports studies.

She said: “I want to compete in the Olympics and have a swimming career. But if I don’t get a career in sport I’d like to be a criminal psychologist. I want to keep my options open.”

Emma said she was honoured to have been chosen to inspire other youngsters, adding: “I was chosen because I do a lot of sport and I am confident at speaking to people. I’m proud to have been asked to do this.”
