The end is ‘neigh’ for the Grey Horse at Birchencliffe as this proud old pub is set to be demolished to make way for a Tesco Express.

Our photograph shows locals have been using it to have a private party after finding an unlocked side door.

In June developer Khela UK and the retailer won permission to demolish the landmark Halifax Road pub near Ainley Top and build two retail units – including one for a small Tesco.

Owner Bal Khela said the last few bureaucratic hurdles were being ironed out and said he expected demolition work to begin next month.

The proposals were initially rejected by the council’s planning committee on highway grounds but Tesco’s commitment was undaunted and the application was eventually voted through months later by a 7-5 majority.
