A GROUP of young people from the Ashenhurst estate in Newsome won the Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing Football Trophy.

The five-a-side football tournament was organised by Young People's Services and sponsored by Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing who manage council housing in Kirklees.

The young people from Ashenhurst beat a team from Lockwood 5-3 in an exciting final held at the Sports Barn at Leeds Road.

The tournament ran over five weeks and involved 56 teams of young people.

Cliff Whiteley, chairman of Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing said: "The event was a major success. The Young People's Service did a fantastic job organising the events and it was good to see so many young people competing to represent their area.

"This is just one of a series of activities being held to encourage children and young people on our estates."

The Kevin Jordan Awards aim to encourage children and young people in Kirklees to make a positive contribution to helping others and the environment. For entry forms - to be submitted by October 1 - ring Philip Hardstone on 01484 221223.
