A EURO-MP has called for Huddersfield's library and art gallery to be saved from demolition.
The building is under threat after Kirklees Council leaders said work totalling at least £5m were needed.
Richard Corbett one of the Yorkshire region's Labour Euro MPs, joined voices calling for the building to be preserved and repaired.
During a visit to Huddersfield he said: "Destroying this much-loved library would undermine Huddersfield's impressive architectural heritage.
"It is a wonderful and popular building that only needs a few repairs."
He urged the council's Liberal Democrat leaders to scrap any plans to demolish it.
He said:"We're not asking for some grand refurbishment and extension – we're simply asking that the library gets the attention it needs so that it can remain as a valuable community asset for the people of Huddersfield."
