EX-GIANTS forward Phil Joseph has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting his pregnant girlfriend.

The professional rugby player was detained by police on Saturday evening following his appearance as a substitute for the Bradford Bulls.

It is thought police were called after an incident at his Golcar home which required his partner Keisha to attend Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for a check-up.

A spokesman confirmed Joseph had been released on police bail until March 12.

He said: “On Saturday, March 3 officers arrested a 27-year-old man on suspicion of assault after reports of a domestic incident at an address on Bryan Terrace, Golcar earlier that day.

“The man is currently on bail pending further enquiries.”

The prop forward, who left the Giants at the end of the 2004 season, has recently been given his chance to return to the Super League after a stint playing for Swinton in The Co-operative Championship, the league below the top flight.

He had also been running controversial King Street pub That Bar.

Joseph, who has also played for Halifax, Hull KR and Oldham, bought the bar with Swinton teammate Rob Foxen in 2010.

But in July last year police asked Kirklees Council to revoke the bar’s licence amid allegations it had been open after hours.

Councillors let Joseph continue after he vowed to improve but in September police again shut the bar following more incidents, including a violent assault.

In October, Joseph agreed to surrender his licence and closed That Bar for good.

He was given a one-year deal with Bradford Bulls after an impressive winter trial with the club.
