REG Cross, the first chancellor of Huddersfield University, has died at the age of 84.

Mr Cross, OBE, died in his sleep at Linson Court, Batley, on Saturday.

He retired from the university 10 years ago after serving as Chancellor for many years.

He was succeeded by Sir Ernest Hall who in turn was replaced this year by actor Patrick Stewart.

Mr Cross, a former trades union leader in Huddersfield, was married to the late Joan and was father of Barbara, Jean, Anne, John, Susan and Lynda.

His funeral service will be held at Dewsbury Moor Crematorium on Friday at 10am.
