FOUR residents from the Hollybank Trust charity are gearing up for the Examiner Charity Challenge.

Emma Guite, 26, will use an electric wheelchair to get round the course and Sarah Brannan, 34, and Debbie Roberts, 46, will be pushed by a carer. James Wright, 33, will walk the one-mile route at Beaumont Park, while the other routes will start from Lepton.

They will all have support on the day, Sunday, May 20, but are keen to do as much for themselves as possible.

Yvonne Hewitt, social care worker at The Beeches where the four live on the main Hollybank Trust site in Mirfield, has taken part in the Examiner Charity Challenge for the last few years.

“We have done the challenge for the last four years,’’ she said.

“I normally rally some members of staff to take part and also some schoolchildren. Now I work in one of the adult homes so I have asked the residents here and four of them are very keen.

“It’s their first time so they are very excited. It’s their challenge, so we are getting sponsors for them on their behalf.

“I’m sure they will enjoy it though which is the main thing. There won’t be any rush – we will just have a lovely afternoon in the park.”

Emma added: “I am looking forward to it. I am hoping for good weather though a s I don’t want to be cold!”

James added: “I am walking round and haven’t done anything like this before so I am hoping to do it well. We will have fun together.”

The Trust meets the needs of children and adults with complex disabilities. Fundraising development officer Dayne Sawyer, said: “The Examiner Charity Challenge has raised a significant amount of money for Hollybank Trust over the years and is a firm favourite on our calendar.

“It is wonderful that our residents also take part. We are very proud of them.”

Hollybank Trust is a registered charity which provides education, care and support for children, young people and adults with profound physical disabilities, associated learning difficulties and complex medical needs.

It relies heavily on the support of individuals, organisations and companies.

This year the aim of the Challenge is to help smaller charities and good causes which is why we are eager for groups like junior sports clubs, Cubs, Guides, Brownies, Scouts, community groups and schools to sign up.

All the organisation is done by Lions clubs across Huddersfield and the Examiner..

This is the 23rd Examiner Charity Challenge and over the years the event has raised £750,000 for a massive range of charities.
