This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Examiner Charity Challenge – and the organisers aim to make it a special one with some new events.

The challenge has raised around £¾m for charities and good causes over the last quarter of a century.

It features a range of walks and bike rides but this year there will also be two runs – one competitive and the other for children aged under 13.

And there will also be a horse ride showcasing some brilliant but under-used bridlepaths in the Marsden area.

The main base will once again be at Lepton Highlanders Recreation and Sports Club and the challenge will be on Sunday, May 18.

There will be three walks: 7 miles, 4 miles and 20km (12.4-mile).

Cycle rides include a 17-mile road route, a 7 mile family route and an 18.5-mile mountain bike route.

The two new events include a competitive 6k run for people over 13 which will feature a £100 prize going to the winner’s chosen charity.

The second is a run around the cricket field at Lepton Highlanders for under 13s.

Away from Lepton there will be a one-mile teddy bear hunt at Beaumont Park. This route is also ideal for wheelchairs.

And the moors above Marsden will feature a 12-mile circular horse ride which is a totally new venue and will set off from the Old Goods Yard at Marsden railway station.

Organiser Rachel Fielder said: “It’s a fantastic bridleway but many people don’t know it exists so we are hoping to promote it via this year’s challenge. It largely follows the old packhorse route across the moors. It’s an upgraded track and the scenery is gorgeous.”

All the organisation is done by Lions clubs across Huddersfield and the Examiner – we even count up all your money and this year the challenge has been sponsored by bar supplies company Ample Ontrade, based in Honley. All people have to do is choose the event they want to do and then sign up to do it.

Organising committee chairman Bob Armitage said: “The challenge is open to everyone but it is ideally suited for smaller charities and good causes which is why we are eager for groups like junior sports clubs, cubs, guides, brownies, scouts, community groups and schools to sign up.

“With a mix of new and old events there’s something for everyone.

“Let’s make this 25th year a really special one.”

Examiner editor Roy Wright said: “We are very much aware of how hard it is for charities and groups to raise money, especially these days.

“All you need to do is choose the event you want, sign up and then come along and have a great day.

“Anyone who has had to organise a fundraising event knows all the organisation and red tape that needs sorting out so by doing this it means you can concentrate on raising as much money as possible.”
