A tongue-in-cheek metaphor in a restaurant review sparked a rant about sliced bread and a frank exchange of views.

Efforts to convey the clamour to try new steak venue, Miller and Carter in Mirfield, offended members of the town’s Facebook group, Mirfield Matters.

One took umbrage at the suggestion that residents of the North Kirklees town considered the launch of a new restaurant as the “most exciting thing since sliced bread”.

The phrase was used following a deluge of reviews of the new restaurant by members of the group, most of which heaped praise on its food.

But one member took offence at the review launching an unpleasant attack on Examiner journalist Nick Lavigueur.

He dubbed him a “clown” for comparing the upmarket restaurant to sliced bread.

When challenged, he responded: “Anyone who compares the arrival of M&C to sliced bread being invented is not really deserving much respect.”

He said he preferred sliced bread and the food at rival Mirfield venue The Ship, a pub with a menu at less than half the price of Miller and Carter.

The post sparked a backlash of responses from diners who were delighted with the restaurant and agreed with the review.

One woman said: “Our visit to Miller & Carter was absolutely lovely, enjoyed it from start to finish. And you’re trying to divert people to the Ship instead?? What on earth are you drinking/smoking?!”

Another added: “We had a beautiful meal at Miller and Carter on Friday afternoon and the service couldn’t be faulted! Yes it was expensive but you get what you pay for? The Ship is the last place I would go!”

One group member said: “Miller and Carter is brilliant and a great addition to Mirfield.”

Another commented: “Comparing Miller and Carter to the Ship is like comparing cava to champagne!!”

A fan posted: “It’s busy every night and the prices are what you should expect for the standard of food provided, table service etc... It has a lovely atmosphere and it is just what was needed in the area.”

Another pitched in: “Sorry, looks like you’re getting a right backlash and I’m about to add to that...Went to M&C after all the hype and it lived up to it.”

Unrepetent, the original commenter later posted, “Heard of journalistic licence, but this guy is going a bit far, we Mirfielders have seen renamed pubs come and go, but best thing since sliced bread, why not go the whole hog and compare it to the second coming??”

Another member responded: “It’s one comment. Do you think you’re perhaps taking this a tad too far and that others have a difference of opinion? And it really is as simple as that.”

The original poster concluded: “I know...to be honest, I didnt expect the comments or controversy, I just think sliced bread was a good invention.”
