Scout leaders are urging youngsters to get out from behind their computer screens and go outdoors.

And one group is bidding for Examiner Wish cash to boost the activities it offers.

The 15th Huddersfield Scout Group based at Cowcliffe is offering young people the chance to enjoy the friendship and adventure which scouting brings.

Leader Phil Pearson said: “At a time when there is growing concern over the amount of time that young people spend in front of computer screens, our members enjoy a wide range of adventurous activities.

“Camping remains at the heart of what we offer but our members have also been sailing, canoeing, climbing, go-karting and pioneering this year.

“We also aim to actively help other people by taking part in projects such as Comic Relief and Children in Need.

“And we recently sent four emergency boxes to the charity Aquabox. These are stored ready to send out to a disaster area when needed.

“Our most recent project has been to take part in Operation Christmas Child.

“Our headquarters building is over 150 years old and requires a great deal of work to maintain.

“We have recently upgraded our toilet facilities using a local community volunteer group who have worked over the summer to transform this part of our building.

“There is still much to do to ensure that our vision of providing a first class facility for the scouts and the local community comes to fruition.

“Contributions from the Examiner Wish campaign will help us to continue on this journey.”

The scouts’ three sections meet at their building on Netheroyd Hill Road.

Beaver Scouts (6 to 8-year-olds) meet on Thursday from 6.30pm – 7.30pm. Cub Scouts (8 to 11-year-old) meet on Monday at 7pm – 8.30pm. Scouts (11 to 14-year-old) meet on Friday from 7pm – 8.30pm.
