A rugby club which celebrates its 130th anniversary next year is hoping to score some Wish Campaign cash.

Lindley Swifts ARLFC are hoping for a slice of the Wish Campaign pie to improve its clubhouse and kitchen.

The club, which plays at Birchencliffe Cricket and Athletic Club, has five teams – four junior teams that play in the Yorkshire Junior League and an open-age team which plays in the Pennine League.

Lindley Swifts, who train opposite the Wappy Springs pub, Lindley, used cash from last year’s Wish Campaign to improve their changing rooms.

The new rooms, which complement the club’s new pitch, were opened in February last year.

But the Swifts are hoping to bring the clubhouse and its kitchen up to the same standards.

Club treasurer Julie Whitaker said: “We’re upgrading the kitchen bit by bit so a couple of hundred pounds would be great.

“We want to bring it up to a standard where we can sell food and open a cafe.”

She added: “We want to start a junior section and get people enjoying our facilities and playing rugby league.”

Lindley Swifts are collecting Wish Campaign vouchers at Birchencliffe Cricket Club.

Lindley Swifts formed in 1884, disbanded in 1939 and reformed in 1992.

The club had the most success in the amateur leagues between 1884 and 1939.

But Lindley Swifts also battled against the biggest league clubs in the 1920s.

Swifts lost 32-2 to St Helens in the first round of the 1928/29 Challenge Cup.

In 1939, the pitch became an allotment to grow vegetables for the war effort.
