Young people are often criticised for their behaviour.

But one group in Holmfirth are proving to be a shining example of community spirit at its finest.

They are behind a project to revamp the local skate park – and they are doing so in memory of their young friend, who died at the age of 14.

Isaac Atkinson, a student at Holmfirth High School, was a keen skateboarder. He was a regular at the skate park at the Sands recreation ground but died in June 2012.

Now the group have joined the Examiner Wish 2013 project to try and boost their funds.

The idea to expand Sands Skateboard Park all started in 2011, but became a focussed project in May 2012.

There was a small group of teenagers who contacted Colne Valley MP, Jason McCartney, to ask for his help in order to expand the park.

The group included Emily-Jane Cappleman, Harry Hale, Toby Munroe, Jake Oversby, Georgina Kitch and Isaac.

Isaac’s stepmum, Sandra Atkinson, said: “After his death, the group disbanded for a while, but then came together again in August 2012, determined to continue the work they started in memory of their dear friend.

“Since August 2012, the children have raised an incredible amount, bringing the total in the trust fund to just over £20,000.

“They have thought of and completed so many events including a sponsored walk, skate jams and bag packing at the local Coop, but have also gained support from the local parish council, which contributed £500 to the project and the Holme Valley Committee, which has given £3,000.

“Although we still have a long way to go, £35,000 to be exact, the original group and now many younger supporting members continue to rally together in order to continue to raise funds”.

Future fundraising events for this year include the ‘Trick or Treating’ walk, which raised an amazing £396 last year, a Whisky Tasting evening on October 25 at Brambles and Carol Singing around Holmfirth, led by Louise Curtis at Hot Banana from December 16.
