A socail group for Springwood residents is hoping the Examiner’s Wish 2013 will help cover their transport costs.

The Friends of Springwood Activity Group meet regularly at Greenhead College and students host the gathering as part of voluntary enrichment activities.

The group has been running for four years and is entirely voluntary.

But many of the members rely on taxis to get to and from the school – particularly in the bad weather – and it is hoped the Examiner’s Wish can set up funds to allow them to attend the fortnightly sessions.

And so far they have already collected 1,000 tokens towards their Wish hopes.

Group secretary Hazel Spencer said: “Residents are invited to play bingo have a go at a raffle and take part in a quiz.

“The students at the college make the refreshments, serve us and give out snacks. They call the bingo and do us a quiz.

“We would urge people to collect tokens for us to go towards transport and refreshment costs.

“Our group encourages people to stay active in their community and prevent them from becoming isolated in their own homes.”

Claire Barnes from Greenhead College who overseas the enrichment activities, said: “They come to us on a Wednesday lunchtime until 3pm and our students volunteer to host the social afternoon.

“The project was set up four years ago and it is really a way of students interacting with people in their community, many of whom are elderly, who would otherwise have little contact.

“The participants and the students really enjoy the afternoons. The bingo is the highlight and students take it in turns to call the numbers and set a quiz.

“It’s nice to give something back to our community. Students are now preparing to host a Christmas party for residents on the last session before the holidays.

“We all bring in food as a thank you and they really enjoy it.”
