A manufacturing firm is looking to build a new factory in Huddersfield.

Polyseam Services want to build on the sprawling car park on St Andrew’s Road, not far from their current base at Aspley.

Plans show it could bring new jobs to the town with potential future expansion of the firm, which has bases in Norway and Sweden and which produces sealants, adhesives and fillers.

A planning document submitted to Kirklees Council says the firm wants a 5,000sqm factory and office space with a service yard and space for 30 vehicles on the land used as a car park.

Drawings show there is also space left for potential for future expansion, although that does not feature in the current plans.

The firm says in a statement: “The proposed use for the new building... will provide a future sustainable economic growth. This includes the transformation of urban areas by providing new economic opportunities.

“The construction of the new building will have tangible benefits for the local community in terms of direct job opportunities. The new facilities will provided future job opportunities with increased staff employment.

“In addition to this Polyseam were keen to secure a site close to their existing factory to retain their existing workforce and ensure this facility continued to provide employment for the local community.”

Kirklees Council owns the land but Cabinet members agreed in 2014 to sell it. Some of the space is leased to Huddersfield University staff for parking.

The Turnbridge car park site was once the home to housing, with several narrow terrace streets once stood on the site.

It was also the home to the Easter funfair for many years, although the discovery of cellars under the car park meant it had to relocate.

It is now used extensively by fans visiting the nearby John Smith’s Stadium for soccer and rugby games.
