PEOPLE are being urged not to hold their own bonfires.

Firefighters say it is far safer to go to organised bonfires with spectacular firework displays than try to hold one yourself in a back garden.

Last year West Yorkshire firefighters were called to 90 bonfires on November 4 and 128 on November 5.

About 60 people are hurt by fireworks in West Yorkshire each year.

A fire service spokesman said: “We would like everyone to enjoy Bonfire Night and the days leading up to it. But we want everyone to stay safe.

“Organisers put a great deal of thought and planning into large community bonfires, which means you don’t have to.

“The firework displays are spectacular and the entrance fees are usually much cheaper than buying a box of fireworks – and the proceeds usually go to charity.’’

He added that the most innocent-looking fireworks can be deadly.

Skelmanthorpe firefighters are organising a bonfire near the station from 6.30pm next Friday. The firework display starts at 8pm.

Adults are charged at £2 and children £1, with all proceeds going to a local charity.
