OVER the course of several decades, Peter Drake has led 40 expeditions in 55 countries.

Many of these were for the Yorkshire Schools Exploring Society, some for the Scouts and some for adults.

Now Mr Drake, from Brockholes, is to speak about his experiences to the Huddersfield and Halifax branch of the Geographical Association.

He has travelled all over the world – Kenya, United States and South Africa to name just a few destinations.

But the subject of his talk is a journey from Cairo to Khartoum – a trip which fulfilled a personal desire to follow the Nile.

He travelled through areas of Egypt and Sudan very different in terrain, geography and political make-up.

With the historical connections of Napoleon, who invaded in 1798, and General Gordon, killed in Khartoum in 1885, it proved an adventure of contrasts.

The illustrated lecture, being given in a joint meeting with the Royal Geographic Association, is at Huddersfield University on Tuesday, January 22 in Room T5/10 of the Technology Building, starting at 7.15pm.

Visitors are welcome and pay £2 a lecture. The event is sponsored by Conroy Homes.
