A HUDDERSFIELD car park will stay open later.

Kirklees Council’s Cabinet last night agreed to move the closing time at Huddersfield Bus Station car park from 6.30pm to 10pm.

Three of the six floors of the multi-storey car park will shift from short-stay to long-stay places as part of a £5,000 change to the Upperhead Row venue.

The council’s Cabinet made the change to help cope with the loss of 1,000 long-stay spaces in the town centre.

This includes 443 spots which will be lost when a new sports centre is built at Spring Grove Car Park.

Some 225 spaces at the bus station will shift from short-stay – costing £2 for three hours – to long-stay, with a charge of £2.50 for five hours.

The council’s Labour Cabinet unanimously backed the move at yesterday’s meeting at Huddersfield Town Hall.

The changes will cost £5,000 for a traffic regulation order, new signs and reprogramming pay machines.
