Kirklees Council overspent a quarterly highway budget by £100,000.

And pothole repairs are one of the reasons why.

The spend forms part of the quarter two 2013/14 revenue monitoring report considered by Cabinet this week.

Council leader Clr Mehboob Khan said he predicted more to come, saying: “We’ve spent an extra £100,000 on pothole repairs and that may need to increase into the next few months during a time when we’ll do our best to keep road repairs safe.”

The £100,000 spend was not wholly spent on potholes – the cost of highway ironworks associated with uninsured metal theft was another reason for the increase.

Clr Shabir Pandor, Cabinet member for resources, reported that the council had saved £6.5m so far in 2013/14.

Other notable savings and spending in quarter two include:Car Parking income under-collection of £93,000

34,000 saving on business rates

Economic Development Unit, savings on employee costs of £175,000;

Licensing, overspend of £121,000, including employee costs of £60,000 and income shortfall £30,000.
