Huddersfield Town fans were left cursing their luck after rehearsals for the FA Cup fourth round draw paired them with Manchester United and Liverpool.

Town fan Bob Farrell, 62, represented the Terriers at the live TV draw which took place on the BBC’s The One Show on Monday night.

In two practice draws Town were selected for a coveted away trip to Old Trafford and a home tie with Liverpool.

But when it came to the real thing, the draw was a less-than-glamorous showdown with League One side Walsall at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Town must win a third round replay at Reading next Tuesday first but Bob said: “It’s a game we can win.”

All the clubs in the draw had a fan invited down to the BBC studios in London and the draw was relayed outside to where the supporters gathered.

As their team was called the fans had to step forward and shake hands with their opponent.

Bob and Reading fan Helen Bullen, 47, had to stick together and both swooped when their clubs were drawn with giantkillers Walsall, represented by Saddlers fan Paul Bickerton, 30.

Bob, who lives in Barnet, South London, helps run the Southern Terriers supporters’ club branch and got the call-up.

Fans had to be there at 4pm and there were two rehearsals for the draw made by One Show presenter Matt Baker and former England striker Ian Wright.

Bob said: “It was unbelievable with the two rehearsals.

“We got Manchester United away and then the one most Town fans wanted, because of David Wagner and Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool at home.

“I knew then it couldn’t be third time lucky but the home fans had to stand on the right and the away fans on the left so I said to Helen we should wait on the right to get a home draw and that’s what happened.

At least if we get past Reading the Walsall tie gives us another chance of drawing Liverpool in the next round.”

Helen said she loved the experience and even got a high five off Matt Baker. She added: “Bob and I stuck together and we had a coffee together in the BBC media cafe afterwards and saw Huw Edwards writing his script for the Ten O’Clock News!”

Reading, beaten semi-finalists last year, held Town 2-2 on Saturday and Helen said her team were Jekyll and Hyde performers.

“We could play wonderfully and win or play badly and lose terribly. We are in a transition period but we might sneak a 1-0 win against Huddersfield.”

Paul, still basking in the glory of a 1-0 win at Championship side Brentford, said he wanted a trip to Huddersfield in the fourth round.

“I’ve never been and it’s another ground to tick off my list,” he said.
