A group gave up their bank holiday to tidy up Holme Moss after an appeal on Facebook and Twitter.

And they cleared more than 20 bags of rubbish from the rural picturesque spot.

Meltham town councillor Richard Noon appealed on social media for volunteers to help with the tidy-up after visiting Holme Moss with his family and saw the mess others had left behind.

On Bank Holiday Monday morning they cleared the hill in front of the visitor car park at Holme Moss.

Clr Noon said: “I went up on Sunday for a potter about and my three-year-old son Oliver said ‘it’s dirty’.

“So I got on Twitter and Facebook and asked for people to come up and help tidy away some of the rubbish.

“There were fireworks, barbecues, empty cans and lots of litter left behind.

“I took 15 bin liners up and filled them all and other people brought some along, so we had maybe 20-30 bags of rubbish filled by the end of the morning.

“I think when even a three-year-old can spot it doesn’t look right then action was needed.

“I don’t know who owns the site – the slope from the car park – whether it’s Yorkshire Water or the council or someone else, but it was a disgrace.”

Among the rubbish cleared were old tyres, oil drums, takeaway wrappers and drinks cans.

The team who volunteered were thanked for their efforts.
