COUNTERFEIT goods seized by trading standards officers are being put to a novel use - in the training of police dogs.

The dodgy fleeces and jackets will be worn by officers when dogs learn how to sniff out criminals.

Adrian Wright, dog training manager with West Yorkshire Police, said: "It is important for suspects to be dressed differently, so that the dogs do not associate offenders with a particular type of clothing.

"This donation enables us to show the dogs the variety of ways in which someone may appear."

A large quantity of illegal products have been handed to the police force.

Graham Hebblethwaite, West Yorkshire's chief trading standards officer, said: "It is pleasing that the illegal clothing is being put to a good use.

"Previously some clothing has been recycled through charities, but this is a new angle, which we are pleased to develop for the future."
