A FAMILY challenge day will take place at the National Coal Mining Museum on Saturday.

Visitors to the museum, at Overton, near Flockton, will be challenged to find a safe light source for a coal mine.

There will also be free arts and crafts sessions.

In the early 19th century, men, women and children worked down mines using candles which were highly dangerous near the gases.

Sir Humphrey Davy was asked to develop a safe lamp that was also bright enough - giving the world the famous Davy Lamp.

On Saturday, there will be living history performances which will explain more about the flame safety lamp. Families can also go on a free underground tour.
