Families have been told a Huddersfield care home looking after relatives with dementia is to shut.

Now they have to try and find alternative homes for their loved ones after the shock announcement by The Carlton EMI Nursing Home.

More than a dozen people suffering from dementia live at the home in Greenways, Golcar, but the company running the business say they cannot afford to keep it open.

One relative said: “One of my parents has been in there for years and is really settled.

“How am I going to explain that it is going to come to an end?

“There are very few places which are suitable for people with dementia and it has been great over the years.

“The staff have been absolutely wonderful and I feel for them as they could be losing their jobs. But what I fail to understand is how the managers can claim they cannot afford: fully-funded places there cost £600 a week."

Staff have been told the home is likely to shut. It is not known how many jobs are under threat.

A spokesman for the Carlton Care Group, who run the home and several others, said there was an ongoing review of business capability and of long term strategy.

“The trigger for the recent review at The Carlton was that the service has been making significant financial losses for a number of years, and John and Helen Lamb and all of the Senior Management Team made a strong commitment to trying to implement a number of changes to improve efficiency and where possible reduce costs, whilst also ensuring quality standards were not compromised.

“Despite implementing these changes, the cost to provide services that are high quality continues to rise, whilst the actual funding for residents from our commissioners has largely remained the same.

“This has been a particular issue in areas such as dementia care where service users have increasingly high dependency needs, requiring higher staffing levels. Therefore despite the changes we have made, the financial losses have continued to be significant and are now impacting significantly on the company as a whole.

“It was with great sadness that the company announced to the staff and relatives of service users a proposal that the home may face closure. We have now entered a consultation period and we are consulting with our staff and commissioning groups to look at ways to avoid closure if possible”.

The spokesman added: “The cost pressures we are experiencing within Carlton mirrors the pressures felt across the country with many nursing and residential homes in the UK facing closure as a result of them no longer being financially viable."
