Two dogs are recovering after being “electrocuted” at Castle Hill.

The pedigree black labradors were struck down outside Victoria Tower last Wednesday and have been cared for at the vet’s ever since.

One of the dogs, which belong to an Almondbury family, needed a major operation on its leg and vet’s bills are likely to reach £2,000.

The Examiner previously reported how the dogs were sniffing around near the tower when they apparently suffered a massive electric shock.

Northern Powergrid engineers were called in and the power was turned off to the tower pending an investigation by Kirklees Council.

A spokesman for Kirklees Council said full electrical reports were due and the power had not been re-connected. The beacon on top of the tower remained unlit.

The Examiner understands the dog’s owners were not insured and that they are considering legal action against the council to cover the vet’s bills.

The council spokesman added: “We still await the report from the vet’s and our thoughts are with the dog owners.”

It is understood the dogs were due to be allowed home later today.

The drama came just 24 hours after a spectacular light show when the tower was illuminated over two nights as part of UNESCO’s International Year of Light and Lighting Technologies.
