A family had a lucky escape after a neighbour spotted smoke billowing from an upstairs window last night.

The neighbour alerted the mother and three teenage sons that a bedroom was on fire at their home in Purlwell Crescent, Batley, and safely evacuated the family before contacting the fire brigade.

Dewsbury firefighters required breathing apparatus and a positive pressure ventilator to tackle the blaze, which caused severe damage to the bedroom. The upstairs of the house was damaged by smoke and the lounge suffered water damage.

The fire is believed to have been cause by a carelessly discarded cigarette and the house had no working fire alarms.

Fire officers have urged everyone to check their fire alarms and, if necessary, contact their local fire station for a free safely check.
