A NEW campaign to investigate "honour" killings revived memories of a terrible double murder in Huddersfield.

Brothers Mohammed Saleem and Abdul Haq were jailed for life 13 years ago this month after being convicted of a brutal double murder.

They kidnapped and killed their own sister and her middle-aged lover- because she had brought disgrace on their proud family.

It was a baffling case and one in which Huddersfield detectives were praised for their diligence.

They encountered a wall of silence from many parts of the ethnic community in Huddersfield but persisted.

And although the victims' bodies were never recovered, police did get enough evidence to jail the evil killers.

Haq and Saleem grabbed Sharifan Bibi and her lover, Hashmat Ali, because they believed she had disgraced the family name.

Mrs Bibi had left her husband of an arranged marriage and went to live with Mr Ali at his home in Highfields.

But she was the daughter of a deeply-devout Muslim and was expected to adhere to a rigid code of conduct.

But Sharifan had fallen in love with Hashmat and wanted to start a new life.

The court was told how the brothers abducted the couple and butchered their bodies in the cellar of a house in Crosland Road, Thornton Lodge.

In an horrific twist, they then burned the remains bit by bit - but it was that which was to trap them.

Forensic scientists discovered traces of human fats in smoky markings in the cellar.

The court which convicted the brothers had to hear gruesome details of the couple's last hours.

They also heard the reasons why the brothers felt obliged to satisfy a family's honour by killing.
