A man injured another with a bottle after drinking to excess when he won a fancy dress competition.

Leeds Crown Court heard Callum Hirst picked up the top prize in the contest at the Revolution nightclub in Huddersfield on November 1 last year which was a £50 bar tab.

Later, he went outside for a cigarette and came across Daniel Rushworth and asked him where he was from.

“He shouted ‘I’m from f..king Huddersfield’ with his arms up in the air”, Hirst from Brighouse said in a written basis of plea.

He went on to say he was drinking from a bottle of beer and swung his hand out in an “instinctive reaction” catching the other man with the neck of the bottle.

That caused a Y-shaped laceration on Mr Rushworth’s forehead which was stitched at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and had left a scar, Jeremy Hill-Baker prosecuting told the court.

Adam Birkby representing Hirst said it was a moment of “utter drunken stupidity” for which he offered an unreserved apology having struck out not intending injury.

He said the action was totally out of character for a young man who was normally a hard-working, tax paying member of the community with a responsible job as a branch manager. He also did a lot to support his local cricket club.

Hirst, 25, of Carr Green Drive, Brighouse, admitted unlawful wounding and was given a 12 month prison sentence suspended for two years with a 30 day activity requirement and 100 hours unpaid work.

Recorder Mark Gargan said: “You have pleaded guilty to an offence of drunken violence which caused a significant injury to another young man who was out trying to enjoy his evening.”
