PUBLIC toilets were saved from the axe by Kirklees councillors.

But they’ve only got a six-month reprieve.

And if residents want their local public loos to remain open, they need to do something about it.

Volunteers are needed to keep the toilets open after the six months has ended.

Clr Christine Iredale, who fought to save the Milnsbridge facilities in her ward, said: “The toilets are not to close until we can find an appropriate place in exchange.

“There’s nowhere in Milnsbridge that’s appropriate so we’re going to keep the current toilets open.

“If we can find a community group to take on the toilets, that would be absolutely wonderful but, until that happens, they will be kept open.

“I’m very pleased because I’ve fought very long and hard for this.

It’s vitally important that people have the facilities there.”

A petition with more than 200 names was submitted to Kirklees Council at the end of last year to save the Milnsbridge public toilets.

But facilities throughout the borough were at risk of being closed as part of council cost-cutting.

The council’s public toilets within the Huddersfield area are sited at Peel Street in Marsden, Carr Lane in Slaithwaite, Morley Lane in Milnsbridge, Westbourne Road in Marsh, Holmfirth bus station, Woodhead Road in Holme, Holmfirth Road in New Mill, Moor Bottom in Honley and Huddersfield town centre bus station.
