A world record bid is being made in Meltham for the greatest number of firewalkers.

And organisers are hoping it will raise a staggering £40,000 for local charities.

Meltham’s Christmas Lights Committee came up with the illuminating idea which will take place on December 3, when the town’s lights will be switched on.

They hope to attract 1,000 people to walk over hot coals and become world record holders, beating the current 608 organised by a New Zealand scout group.

Richard Noon, one of the organisers, said: “We have got four local groups in mind and if we get 1,000 people it’ll mean £10,000 each goes to Kirkwood Hospice, the Huddersfield Town Foundation for the breakfast club, Huddersfield Live (food festival) and £10,000 to Meltham’s Christmas Lights.

“The current record is 608 set in New Zealand which was done by the Scouts, so we want to beat it.”

The event itself will cost £10,000 to stage, and each person entering will be asked to pay £50 to cover the cost and towards the charities.

Noon, also a town councillor, added: “On the day itself there will be plenty going on, we’ll have a band and the Christmas lights will be switched on.

“Teams of colleagues can enter the event, or people individually.

“We did a smaller hot coal walk earlier this year but we want to make it a world record event and support local charities.

Kirkwood Hospice does amazing work and Huddersfield Town are having a record-breaking start to their season so fans can become actual record breakers.”

In fundraising for the Food Festival organisers hope to show they can help save a much-loved event, which a newly-formed group Huddersfield Live is pursuing.

The rest will benefit Meltham, where the event will be staged.
