TALK about trains, planes and automobiles. All roads lead to Wembley for Huddersfield Town fans from near and far.

Many Town supporters are jetting in from Europe for Saturday’s play-off final against Sheffield United while others are plotting a course across Britain.

Whitby-based Town fan Gary Walker is one of those determined not to miss out – even though he had surgery on his ankle just a month ago.

Gary, 51, developed an infection in his right ankle and was left with an egg-sized wound after surgery.

Gary is still walking with the aid of a crutch, but that won’t stop him embarking on a solo 300-mile journey by bus, train and tube to Wembley.

“I wouldn’t miss it for anything,” said Gary.

“When I had the operation I told the surgeon that I wanted to go to Wembley and he said he would do his best. I said that whatever happened I’d be there.”

Dad-of-five Gary, a swimming pool lifeguard, plans to leave home at 6.30am on Saturday getting a bus from Whitby to Scarborough.

He will then catch a train to York before boarding another for the journey to King’s Cross.

He will then use the bus and tube to reach Wembley.

Gary will meet up with son Lee, 19, and mates from the Wellington pub in Huddersfield in the capital.

“I missed the last two games of the season, but I wouldn’t miss this,” said Gary.

“My mates said if it came to it they would carry me or get a wheelchair!”

Other fans have told the Examiner of their planned journeys.

Helen Pearson, formerly of Marsden, now lives in Denmark and hopes for better luck for her trip than when she went to Old Trafford for last year’s play-off final.

The flight into Stansted was fine but the train up North broke down in Peterborough.

In an email to the Examiner Helen said: “I did finally manage to get to Huddersfield after travelling via York on the East Coast line and a 12-hour journey.

“This year’s journey is much more straightforward, a 4am start to the airport and flying to Stansted again.

“I should be in London in plenty of time to soak up the atmosphere.

“Let’s hope they win as I have been home four times this season and only seen them draw.

“Maybe I should stay away but I can’t. The Terriers are in my blood and even though I am across the North Sea I still listen to Oggy and Kieran (on Radio Leeds) every week. I also plan visits home around where Town are playing.”

Helen works in an international school in Ikast and moved to Denmark three years ago.

Lifelong Town fans Eileen and Terry Tinham are travelling from Hartlepool, as they often do to watch the Terriers.

Eileen, 56, and Terry, 60, were both born in Huddersfield but moved to Hartlepool in 1986 and get to as many games as they can.

They sent the Examiner a photograph of the two of them in Tenerife last December watching the game at Charlton which ended Town’s 43-match record-breaking unbeaten run.

Gavin Sykes is flying into Yorkshire from his home in Amposta, Spain, a town halfway between the footballing hotbeds of Barcelona and Valencia.

He will jet into Leeds-Bradford Airport on Friday and then drive to London.

Andy Carr, meanwhile, is heading over the Irish Sea.

Andy and his daughter, who live in Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, will be up at 4am to fly from Dublin at 6.30am.

For fans abroad who aren’t travelling there will be plenty of bars showing the action.

Former Huddersfield pub owners Elaine and Brian Hayhurst will be cheering for Town from a bar on the Costa del Sol.

In an email Elaine said the couple planned to find a “semi-outdoor” bar with atmosphere and added: “We will not mind sharing the coverage with Sheffield supporters. It all adds to the banter.

“We do hope Town finally make it through this time. We will be thinking of all our family and friends back in sunny old Huddersfield!”
