A family had a lucky escape when a fire alarm prevented their home from being damaged.

The householder was at a neighbouring house when he heard his own smoke alarm sound.

He was able to raise the alarm and prevent serious damage.

Huddersfield Fire Station watch commander Andy Blackburn said the incident took place in Ripon Avenue, Fartown, at 12.30am yesterday.

The owner of the property, his wife and children were staying with elderly relatives a few doors up the road when the drama began.

The wife had left a pan bubbling away on the hob.

Fortunately the husband stepped outside the relatives’ house and heard his own smoke alarm going – which had been fitted by Huddersfield fire crews just weeks ago.

He opened his door and was met with a cloud of smoke.

He dialled 999, a fire crew arrived promptly and cleared the smoke.
