A man has been jailed for a total of three and a half years after he was arrested for a drug offence while already on bail for earlier charges.

Leeds Crown Court heard officers executed a search warrant at an address in Tanfield Road, Huddersfield on December 4, 2013 and found a plastic bag containing 11 wraps of heroin and another holding 14 wraps of crack cocaine on the floor of the main room. A further search in the kitchen revealed a bag containing £267 worth of cocaine in the fridge door.

The only person in the property was Sukhvinder Singh and phones recovered in the property suggested their owner was involved in drug dealing. Singh denied any offences and claimed he was just at the house while the occupants were out.

Philip Adams prosecuting told the court he was bailed pending inquiries. On February 24 last year a car was stopped in Huddersfield and the passenger, when he was searched at the police station, was found to have a cigarette packet containing 20 wraps of heroin and £350 in notes.

Later that day the same car was stopped again and on that occasion Singh was the passenger. He also was found with a cigarette packet containing five wraps of heroin and analysis showed it was indistinguishable in its chemical composition from the earlier seizure.

Mr Adams told the court that suggested the drug came from the same batch and the two street dealers were acting together.

In addition £285 in cash was seized from Singh.

The court heard at the time of the offences Singh was studying joinery at college and told a probation officer he saw drugs as an easy way of making money.

Adam Birkby representing Singh said: “He knows he is going to prison and it is simply a question of how long.”

Singh, 23, of Alder Street, Fartown, admitted four charges of possessing Class A drugs with intent to supply and one of possessing criminal property. He was sentenced to 40 months on the drugs offences with two months consecutive for failing to answer bail.
