The Independent Police Complaints Commission has launched an investigation following the tragedy on Methley Road, Castleford, early today.

Police said a Rover 25 was being followed by officers when it was involved in a crash at 2.25am.

No other vehicle was involved.

The man, who was driving the car, was cut free from the wreckage by firefighters, but was pronounced dead at hospital.

Two women were in the car. Both were injured, one seriously.

The badly hurt woman was taken to Pinderfields Hospital.

The other suffered minor injuries and was taken to Pontefract General Infirmary.
