The 42-year-old man from Skelmanthorpe was involved in a collision with a car at a roundabout near Penistone.

The cyclist was flown by air ambulance to Sheffield's Northern General Hospital with serious internal injuries and dislocated hips.

His injuries are so serious South Yorkshire Police have described his condition as "life-threatening."

A police spokesman said the cyclist was going round the roundabout when the accident happened.

"The cyclist was trapped under the car and had to be freed by the fire service," he said. "The collision resulted in the roundabout and the roads joining the roundabout being closed."

The car, a Nissan Micra, was being driven by a 46-year-old woman from Manchester.

The roads reopened at 12.30pm after officers from South Yorkshire Police's Collision Investigation Unit had examined the scene.
