CIRCUS performers, dancers and musicians took to the streets of Huddersfield for last night’s colourful Festival of Light.

Thousands of adults and children turned out for the show, and thousands more are expected to watch a re-run tonight.

But the event was met with disappointment by some families and revellers who braved the cold to watch the parade.

Many young children were unable to get a glimpse of the acts, while others felt squashed as the parade moved around the centre.

But people still have the chance to catch the show again tonight.

Clr Ken Sims, Kirklees Council Cabinet member for regeneration, said: “The Festival of Light is a wonderful event for Huddersfield.

“Every year it’s well enjoyed by thousands of local people as well as visitors to the town.

“It’s great that local people are also being given the chance to take part in the two performances.”

The two-day parade features dramatic stunts by Spanish group Xarxa Teatre.

While arty students at Huddersfield University joined in the street parade wearing an array of colourful costumes.

The show brought together the spirit of carnival with dancing and fireworks throughout the town centre.

It started and finished outside the bus station, taking in Market Street, New Street and High Street.

Fireworks ended the night as families, students and visitors left the town centre extravaganza.

Fixby youngster Muney-Singh Jauhal, 15, a pupil at Heckmondwike Grammar School, said: “I think this is a really great event, it’s awesome to see everybody together.

“I like the atmosphere of everybody being around and enjoying themselves around one big performance. It’s really cool.”

But former drama student Zoe Kane, 24, and her friends were less than impressed.

The officer worker at FMG Support said: “I came here expecting so much because last year was such a good event, but it was a bit disappointing.

“We couldn’t see anything and the only way to see what was going on was to force your way to the front.

“I could see many parents having to try to beat the rush just so their children could see the performers.

“Last year’s event was all in the air, and everyone could enjoy it and it seemed much better organised.

“It might have helped if the streets were closed off and people stood watching from the side. Instead it was a bit of a mess.”

Tonight’s event starts from 6.30pm.
