FAMILIES looking forward to festive lunches were left hungry after a village pub suddenly closed its doors.
People arriving at the Fountain in Ingbirchworth for Christmas and Boxing Day lunches were shocked to find it closed.
Guy Overton, of Denby Dale, had booked a Boxing Day meal at the pub near Penistone for himself, his daughter and her partner - who had travelled from Hove in Sussex - and a friend from Huddersfield and her sister, who had come from Wales.
But when they got to the pub on Wellthorne Lane it was in darkness.
There was a note pinned to the door saying the pub was closed for refurbishment from December 18.
But there were no staff on the premises to deal with disappointed customers.
Mr Overton and his family were lucky. They got a lunch at the Dunkirk pub in Denby Dale.
He said: "We were very lucky. It was a lovely lunch.
"But I thought that to close with no call or a letter, when I had paid a deposit, was wicked and diabolical.
"I feel more sorry for people who had planned family lunches on Christmas Day.
"It must have been dreadful."
No-one from the Fountain was available to comment.
