A boy is fighting for life in hospital after a mystery incident in Huddersfield.

The 15-year-old is in a hospital’s special care unit after suffering serious burns at an outbuilding in Low Moor, off Town End Lane, Lepton.

The incident happened in a small hamlet of farm buildings.

Police and a West Yorkshire fire investigation officer are still trying to work out exactly what happened on Thursday afternoon.

Det Insp Mark Colman of Kirklees CID said the teenager was “in a very poorly way and is in a critical condition”.

A police source said the slightest infection could prove fatal.

Huddersfield Fire Station Watch Commander Chris Bell said: “We received the call at 4.07pm on Thursday and arrived at an outbuilding or detached shed in Low Moor, off Town End Lane, Lepton.

“The fire had already burnt itself out.

“The boy suffered flash burns and received care from paramedics before the Yorkshire Air Ambulance took him to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment.

“An investigation is being undertaken by fire investigation officers.”

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police said further enquiries were being made.

The scene of the incident was sealed off by police as investigations were carried out.
