COUNCIL bosses plan to spend £300,000 on getting us all fit.

A major boost to the drive by Kirklees and its health partners to get local people more active will be recommended to the council's Cabinet on Wednesday.

The cash boost comes from a Government Performance Reward Grant for the council and other agencies with which it works to achieve performance targets above and beyond what was expected and agreed with ministers.

Many projects are in line to be started once the cash arrives.

They include:

* Healthy walking programmes

* Cycling schemes

* Health and exercise programmes to reduce obesity

* Increasing the range of women-only fitness schemes

* Improving Leeds Road Playing Fields

* Sports field improvements

* Providing young people with 'friendly' gym equipment

* Park improvements

* Developing boxing facilities in Cleckheaton for children and young people.

Clr Ken Sims, Cabinet member for regeneration, which covers sport and leisure activities, said: "Encouraging people of all ages to become more active, watch their diet and get healthier is a key priority.

"It also fits in with the Kirklees Youth Games, which is a long-term package to Getting Fit for 2012, the Year of the London Olympics.

"The package of proposals range from small-scale spending on specific schemes to Kirkleeswide marketing and promotional campaigns," he added.

The Performance Reward Grant of almost £6.5m is part of the Government's programme of developing local public service sgreements with councils and partners, such as health trusts, the police and voluntary sector.

The concept is for more joint working at local level by councils and other agencies providing public services.
