Schools in Kirklees spent almost £2 million on supply teachers in one term.

A total of £1,876,728 was shelled out for teaching cover during the autumn term of 2013 – but it was less than the figure for the same period in 2012 which was £2,085,169.

Supply teachers are brought in to cover staff absences due to sickness, maternity leave, training and unfilled vacancies – and schools have insurance to cover some or all of the cost.

The schools with the highest bills are all in Dewsbury.

Top of the list was Dewsbury’s Westborough High School which spent £75,997 on supply teachers in three months.

The troubled Earlsheaton Technology College ran up a bill of £63,609 after being placed in Special Measures. It has since closed and re-opened as Manor Croft Academy.

Not far behind was St John Fisher Catholic High School with a spend of £62,040.

At the other end of the scale was Farnley Tyas First School in Huddersfield which spent just £14.98.

In Huddersfield, the three schools employing the most supply teachers were Royds Hall (£39,293), Colne Valley and Scissett Middle School, which both spent just over £36,000.

These were followed by Kirkburton Middle (£32,391), Fixby Junior and Infant (£28,247) and Newsome High schools (£27,138).

The top spending primary school was also in Dewsbury, with Ravensthorpe Infant and Nursery leading the way on £35,228. The school had been placed in Special Measures and has since closed.

Heckmondwike Primary spent £33,389 while the cost to Headlands CE (VC) Junior, Infant and Nursery School, Liversedge, was £30,733.

Special schools Longley, Ravenshall and Fairfield all spent more than £40,000 on extra cover.

Meanwhile, North Huddersfield Trust and Honley High only spent a little over £9,000 each and just £11,521 at Almondbury High.

Local primary schools wwith bills less than £1,000 were Wilberlee, Birdsedge, Skelmanthorpe, Holme, Scholes, Lydgate Junior and Infant, Upperthong, Kirkheaton, Cumberworth and St Aidan’s.
