A NEWSOME pensioner is appealing for help to catch a youth who assaulted him as he walked home from the pub.

Alfred Harling, 76, was attacked after pushing past a group of youths on Towngate in Newsome at 3.30pm on October 12.

He was leaving The Clarence pub on Towngate and walking home to Edale Avenue when he saw a group of six teenagers in school uniform coming towards him.

They were walking abreast and blocking the path. Mr Harling asked them to move, but got no response so he pushed through the group.

One of the boys complained and there was an altercation. The boy then ran towards Mr Harling and pushed him by the shoulders so that he was leaning over a wall. Mr Harling tried to defend himself and the boy hit him on the head.

He then turned away and rejoined the group. Mr Harling tried to follow, but fell in the road. He managed to get home and call the police and an ambulance.

He suffered bruising and bad cuts to his knees and bruising to his shoulders and back.

Police are making enquiries, but Mr Harling says he fears that as time passes, witnesses may forget about the incident.

He said: “I wanted to go down to Newsome High School and pick him out but it’s not allowed. The police have taken photographs of my injuries and spoken to me, but now it’s half-term and not much can be done until next week.

“I want someone to help us find who it is because I am just worried that he will get away with it.”

The youth is described as a black male, aged around 15. He had a shaved head and wore a school uniform and carried a black bag.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact the Huddersfield police helpdesk on 01484 436659.
