A LORRY driver escaped after fire broke out in his vehicle on the M62.

The Highways Agency closed two lanes of the motorway while firefighters battled the blaze on the lorry, which was carrying refrigerated food.

The incident happened on the eastbound carriageway between Junction 25 at Brighouse and Junction 26 at Chain Bar at 4.30am yesterday.

The fire is believed to have started when a wheel bearing collapsed in a rear wheel chamber.

The driver managed to pull in to the hard shoulder and uncouple the unit from the back of the LGV. He escaped unhurt.

The two inside lanes of the eastbound carriageway were closed for 90 minutes during the incident.

The blaze caused large hold-ups throughout the morning peak period
