A COUPLE had a lucky escape when they returned home after a trip to find logs on fire in their living room and their house full of smoke.

The man and woman called in Huddersfield firefighters at 7.30pm on Sunday to their smoke-logged semi at Close Hill Lane, Newsome.

A pile of logs stored next to the woodburner were on fire.

The home owners threw water on wood before alerting the fire services.

Crew Commander Danny Butterfield said: “This couple had a lucky escape – another half an hour later and they would have had a severe fire.

“Woodburners are becoming very popular these days with the high price of fuel, and they can reach temperatures of up to 2,000ºC.

“We would urge all owners to store their logs away from the fire.

“They should also follow the fire’s safety instructions and ensure that they are properly maintained, especially the flues.”
