Dozens of bails of hay were set alight in a suspected arson attack.

The large stack of bails wrapped in plastic were set on fire at about 1am this morning near Meltham.

Firefighters from Huddersfield, Meltham and Slaithwaite found the burning pile down a dirt track about a quarter-of-a-mile from the Wills O' Nats pub.

The farm owner had already tackled the fire by trying to pull the burning stack down with a tractor.

Firefighters struggled for water due to the distance from a hydrant.

With help from the farmer, they eventually spread the hay out and were able to douse the flames.

An investigation is underway.
