AN INQUEST has opened into the death of a pensioner in a fire at his village home.

A Bradford coroner yesterday heard initial details about Arthur Holmes, who died on Tuesday night.

Mr Holmes, 88, was pulled from his farmhouse on Brownhill Lane in Holmbridge when fire broke out at about 9pm.

Medics were unable to save the much-loved villager, who was declared dead at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

Toxicology reports have been ordered. It will be some time before the cause of his death is established.

Mr Holmes was described by neighbours as, “a wonderful man, a very interesting man with a very dry wit which he never lost. He was remarkably independent.”
