A fire which burned for days at a woodyard is finally out.

South Yorkshire fire crews have finally left the Crow Edge premises of R Plevin & Sons, after fighting fires in a huge stack of wood chippings for 10 days.

But they have now set up a plan to try and ensure there are no more outbreaks at the premises.

The fire service will be liaising with the local community and other groups such as the Environment Agency and local councils over its concerns about the site, again in a bid to help stop another incident from occurring and to provide reassurance to the public.

Dozens of firefighters from stations across South and West Yorkshire spent time at the plant.

They used pumping equipment brought in from as far away as Nottinghamshire to pour millions of litres of water from Hade Edge reservoirs on to the fire.

It was the second blaze in a matter of weeks at the premises and there was great concern among residents about huge palls of acrid smoke. At one point the smoke reached Sheffield, some 19 miles away.

A South Yorkshire brigade spokesman said: “With large amounts of wood still on the site, and the potential of ‘hot spots’ in other wood stacks, we will continue to monitor conditions at the site due to the risk of other fires breaking out.

“The recent incident is the second fire to have happened on the site in recent weeks, so the fire service is considering all possible measures to help prevent future fires from occurring on the site, including possible legal action”.
