A WOMAN aged 85 was being treated in hospital last night after smoke filled her home when her dinner set alight.

The Paddock woman had put her Sunday lunch in the oven yesterday afternoon, but had instead switched the grill on by mistake.

It meant smoke quickly filled up as she sat in another room waiting for it to be cooked.

Luckily, her working smoke detector alerted staff monitoring her Care Line system and they called the fire service.

Watch Commander Andy Blackburn, from Huddersfield Fire Station, explained: “There must have been some cooking oil or fat in the tray which ignited it and caused all the smoke.

“Her smoke detector activated a care line which sent a message and the people who monitor it weren’t able to contact her so they called us.

“When we arrived she was standing at the door and was a bit confused.

“Our firefighters gave her oxygen therapy while the paramedics arrived and they took her to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary by ambulance.

“The main thing is the lady is OK.”

The incident happened yesterday at 4.30pm in High Street, Paddock, and firefighters were able to extract the smoke from the property.
