FIREFIGHTERS battled to free a driver trapped in his lorry after a motorway smash.
Crews from Huddersfield, Cleckheaton, Elland and Brighouse rushed to the crash at midday yesterday after two heavy good vehicles collided on the westbound carriageway of the M62 between junctions 25 at Clifton and 24 at Ainley Top .
Brighouse and Elland fire station manager Richard Mawson took charge at the scene.
He said: "One wagon ran into the back of another causing serious impact damage.
"The driver of the second lorry was trapped in his cab and the steering wheel was really pushing into him.
"There wasn't a lot of space, but we managed to get the hydraulic ram in to push the wheel off him."
After 30 minutes the man was freed and rushed to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary with serious leg injuries.
There were long delays as three of the four westbound lanes were closed because of debris and a fuel spillage.
A further lane was reopened at 1pm, with the others opening later.
