FIREFIGHTERS tackling a huge blazing warehouse discovered another building burning nearby.

Elland and Brighouse crews were alerted to a fire in a textile warehouse at Marshfield Mills on Dewsbury Road near the former Gannex Mill close to Elland town centre at midnight.

Flames were shooting through the roof and crews immediately called for back-up.

The burning warehouse is surrounded by other mill buildings - some of them four storeys high - and when help arrived other firefighters checked surrounding buildings and found another on fire.

The warehouse was destroyed and the other building used to store cars and a recovery truck was badly damaged.

Crew manager Ian Clough, of Brighouse fire station, said: "The roof was well alight when we arrived at the first fire.

"The other building on fire was around 50 yards away.

"We called for back-up to bring the fires under control and stop any chance of them spreading to the larger mills nearby."

At the height of the fires there were 18 fire engines and specialist appliances with around 100 firefighters from all over West Yorkshire tackling the blazes.

Aerial appliances were needed to pour water on the infernos from above.

Both fires were brought under control by around 3am, but crews were there all night damping down.

Both buildings are made from brick and the warehouse was totally destroyed.

Fire investigators were due at the scene during the day to start sifting through the wreckage to pinpoint a cause.
